For those who like to attract wild birds to their yard nothing does a better job than a large bird feeder.  These will bring in both small and large species of birds and give you a pleasant view of their feeding habits throughout the year.

The great thing about hanging up a feeder in the yard is that you never know what kinds of animals you are going to attract.  In fact, you may even end up with a group of squirrels whether you intended to or not.  Once they find a viable food source squirrels will not only remember to stop in on a regular basis but they will be sure to tell all of their friends, too.

Placing food out for the birds also means that the type of large bird feeder you have selected needs to be user friendly.  By that, it should be easy to open and clean.  Hopefully, it will bring in quite a few of your feathered friends meaning it will need to be filled on a regular basis.  You want it to be as easy as possible or chances are its maintenance will be neglected.  Neglecting the maintenance of a bird feeder can mean you will be providing an unhealthy food source and endanger the wild birds.

Hanging a large bird feeder in a convenient spot is also necessary.  While it should be accessible for you to maintain it also needs to be out of the reach of predators.  Cats and other small creatures will find a flock of birds temping and will make it a point to attack it when it is busy with activity.  The neighborhood cats will learn to stake out this food source.  Eventually, the wild birds will get the hint and leave and then your work will have been in vain.

Placement is also important so that you can watch the feeder and its attendant wild bird population from a safe distance without scaring off the birds.  Installing one next to a deck is a great place as long as cats cannot access it and as long as the activities conducted on the deck won’t scare away the birds.  The best way to prevent this is to place it on a garden pole close away from the deck but not so far away that you can’t easily conduct a little bird watching while sipping a glass of wine or playing on your netbook while relaxing.  A cat will not be able to climb the pole and at the same time you will be able to easily refill the unit.

A large bird feeder brings so much pleasure to a yard.  It is quiet, relaxing and can attract a different multitude of colorful birds that can also help with any pesky insects.  An added benefit to your bird watching pleasure.
