Overhead cranes are common in most environments where heavy items need to be moved from one location to another. These environments include large factories, supply store distribution centers, wood mills, motor garages, etc. The list is endless. In the case of a supply store distribution center for example, an overhead crane will be used to move heavy boxes from the floor to the actual loading bay. In all of cases, they have the same basic design and can be easily recognized. Below, we are going to explain overhead crane parts to you.

There is an overhead bridge along which the vehicle travels. The area below whole length of the bridge is called the runway. It is kept clear at all times as it defines the path along which the items will be moved.

The heavy machine itself is attached to the rail and has some kind of mechanism which allows it to be able to move freely along the bridge. A hoist mechanism is attached to the heavy machine. This mechanism has a chain or line attached which extends down towards the ground. At the end of the line there is usually a large hook which is used to hook onto some kind of harness. The heavy item to be moved is placed into the harness.

When in operation, the heavy machine is moved over the item to be moved. The item is secured in the harness. A control device is used to lower the line and the hook is attached to the harness. Once secured, the line is lifted with the hoist mechanism until the item to be moved is raised above the ground.

With everything in place the crane can now be moved along the bridge. It is stopped at the item pick up point. The line is lowered, the hook and harness detached and the item is now ready to be dispatched.
