San Diego is primarily known for being a bright and sunny city, with dozens of beautiful and unique beaches, shopping and entertainment centers, and cultural and natural venues. They also have many animal attractions, like world-famous San Diego Zoo, and the iconic SeaWorld San Diego. But what can amaze people is that this city has a world within a world, an actual natural safari that houses thousands of animals in dozens of different environments. This, is the San Diego Wild Animal Park.

What will soon be known as the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is a semi-arid, naturally suitable, 1,800 acre environment housing over 3,000 animals from from 400 species. Large animals like zebras, giraffes, elephants, even lions and cheetahs, are enclosed in their own, selectively free-range enclosures, while other, smaller species like gorillas, many different kinds of lizards, reptiles, and birds, are housed in spacious and very natural indoor exhibits.

For instance, butterflies, lemurs, bees, meerkats, and other smaller animals are found in a place called the Nairobi village, and the walking trail called the Journey Into Africa exhibit. Birds can be found in the Wings of the World aviary, and gorillas can be seen in the Gorilla Habitat houses. Elephants can be found in the Elephant Overlook, and the lions in the Lion Camp exhibit.

To see these animals in their respective exhibits, the park offers a wide variety of modes of transportation. There’s a biofuel powered tram to quickly bring people from one place to another, a hot air balloon ride to give a bird’s eye view of the whole sanctuary, and Land Rover vehicles to bring visitors up close and personal to the lions. There are also a number of walking trails, which are just as enjoyable, if not moreso, than riding in vehicles.

Animal lovers everywhere are definitely going to enjoy the Wild Animal Park. It is a must-see, must-experience attraction to all people visiting the city of San Diego.
